SCROLL DOWN TO LEARN HOW
In 2015, the California legislature passed
Assembly Bill 953 (AB-953), a measure that would alter
law enforcement procedures.
RIPA data is not collected through some form of identification like a driver’s license or a passport but purely based on an officer’s perception of the person they stopped. The collected data is then submitted to the California Department of Justice.
Like all agencies, San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) needed an effective way to collect and submit this data from the field.
THE RESULTS
Faster Reporting, Quicker Compliance, Greater Accuracy
Fast, Precise Stop Data Entry
With Veritone Contact, SLOPD only needs a couple minutes to enter RIPA stop data, including reports with multiple individuals.
Easy, Painless Review Process
Veritone Contact’s PII detection offered SLOPD a better way of reviewing their stop data before submitting the report to the DOJ.
Ease Enhanced Security and Compliance Use
By using Veritone Contact, SLOPD has a more optimized workflow that allows them to move swiftly while bolstering integrity and transparency.
Cloud-based SaaS Application
Veritone Redact also has the advantage of being a software-as-service (SaaS) platform, a factor that played a key role in Druckenmiller’s selection. Operating in the cloud, Redact eliminates the need for his department to purchase equipment or require the assistance of city IT staff. Moreover, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Redact affords Druckenmiller with the flexibility to use the Veritone Redact software application remotely, avoiding potential exposure at the police department.
“Change is not always easy. But once our officers started using Veritone Contact, they realized that it didn’t take as much time to create and submit these reports. Unlike the previous vendor, Veritone was very responsive, very timely, and came up with a solution to the problem that worked.”

Cycle interactions (cycle next and cycle previous) allow users to cycle through a folder or group of objects at the click of a button. When a user clicks to activate this interaction, Ceros will automatically show the next object (or group or folder) in your targeted folder while also turning off the visibility for all of the other assets in that folder. Alternatively, you can use the cycle previous interaction to show the previous object in the folder.
To source new SVGs, locate the Media Library in the top toolbar, select "Icons," and search key terms.
To change the color, select the .svg file (try searching .svg in the layers panel), scroll down in the design panel, and select the color swatch.
In this experience, there are two tabs with only one visible at a time.
In the studio, after making your edits in each tab, make sure to turn the visibility of "tab: the challenge" ON and "tab: the solution" OFF.
The video background is pinned which means it is fixed to a specific point in the viewport. Pinning an object allows you to keep the objects always visible on the canvas, regardless of where the user scrolls on the canvas.
Note: Pinned objects do not currently work on full-height embedded experiences; only standalone experience and scrolling embedded experiences.
To unpin select the "pinned video background" group. Next to the X,Y coordinates click the pin icon.
To replace the video, select the video on the canvas or in the layers panel and click the "Replace Video" button, which is next to the video thumbnail in the design panel. Any video settings on the original video will carry over to the new one.
CASE STUDY:
Widely known as the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA), this new legislation requires all law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in the state of California to “collect perceived demographic and other detailed data regarding pedestrian and traffic stops.”
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Not only was the data reformatted and submitted to the DOJ successfully before the deadline, officers now only spend 2 minutes per report (including reports with multiple people).
Working with the previous vendor, SLOPD was constantly frustrated by a lack of responsiveness when they faced issues. But that has changed working with the Veritone team.
“We are extremely happy with the responsiveness and timeliness of the Veritone Team,” said Lieutenant Robert Cudworth. “When we had an issue and something wasn’t working, all we had to do was send an email or make a phone call, which resolved the matter.”

The ChallengeS
THE SOLUTIONS
At the time, SLOPD was working with an existing citation vendor that offered a no-cost RIPA service as an add-on to their existing service. Trying to avoid disparate systems, they initially tried this solution, but unfortunately, the backend data organization and submission process was not functioning properly, leading to a backlog of data that had to be submitted to the DOJ by a specified date.
The data bottleneck put the agency at risk of falling out of compliance and good standing with the CA DOJ. They also wanted to ensure they could provide the necessary data requested by members of the community to maintain transparency and trust.
In addition to their data challenges, the department found the stop data collection process solution cumbersome, requiring an officer to submit a single report per person. On average, a report can take 4–5 minutes, leading to officers spending more time building reports which diminished their ability to maintain their patrol presence in the community.

Realizing that they had a twofold problem, formatting of previously collected data to make it submittable to the DOJ, and a more efficient and scalable solution that their officers could use, they turned to Veritone Contact.
By adopting Veritone Contact, an intelligent stop data collection application used by many law enforcement officers nationwide for pedestrian and vehicle stops, SLOPD officers now had a mobile interface to capture this necessary RIPA data in the field and successfully submit it to the DOJ.
“The previous solution we were using had a form-type format. You had to fill out the entire form and check the boxes for that contact,” said Sergeant Jeff Booth. “It was a longer process than Veritone, and we learned we could process reports and submit them faster with Contact.”
In addition to adopting Contact, SLOPD leveraged Veritone’s professional services team to build a customized solution to reformat their backlogged data they had already captured with their previous solution, and get it submitted to the California Department of Justice.
The SolutionS
Veritone Contact was developed in close collaboration with the California State DOJ and key city LEAs, and greatly reduces the time it takes to collect data, minimizes review efforts, and offers greater insight for constituent transparency initiatives and training.

The added benefit of working with Veritone is that the Contact team monitors future legislation and changes to previous RIPA laws. Product updates always reflect these changes to keep agencies compliant.
Unlike other solutions, Veritone Contact offers the ability to create custom questions and the required collection of data points to satisfy RIPA laws. For a department like SLOPD who services a college community, having additional stop data (like what percentage of their stops are with non-residents) is instrumental in understanding the mission SLOPD faces in keeping the community safe.
